Operating out of a garage in rural New Jersey in 1949, it’s unlikely the founders of TST Glass Co. (whose first product was a snakebite kit) envisioned that their family-owned operation would one day evolve into the company now known as Comar, the premier specialty packaging and dispensing provider serving the health and wellness and specialty food markets.
Moving from converting glass tubing for the healthcare industry to manufacturing custom vials and pipettes in 1961 to launching its plastic operations in 1981, Comar acquired Dougherty Brothers in 1988; the acquisition included a 130,000 sq. ft. plastic molding facility in Buena, NJ. ISO certification followed in 1994, and two years later we opened our Strategic Technology Center — bringing opportunities for increased innovation by combining computer-aided design technology and a team of highly skilled packaging experts. Our mold design and build operations expanded into a new, state-of-the-art facility in 2000 to accommodate the demanding requirements of our pharmaceutical customers. In 2007, Comar sold its glass division, retaining its glass pipette manufacturing capabilities.
Comar merges with Convergence Packaging
With the merger of Comar and Convergence Packaging Holdings in late 2014, the company took a giant leap forward — virtually tripling its manufacturing facilities, broadening its product portfolio, extending its market reach, and acquiring new distribution channels nationwide and beyond.
Convergence itself was formed from the merging of three companies: Scandia Plastics in 2012; Paradigm Packaging in 2013, and Precision Medical in 2014. The company’s manufacturing locations in New Jersey, Georgia, Wisconsin and California expanded Comar’s national footprint and opened up a gateway to growth opportunities on the West Coast. With Convergence joining the fold, Comar gained a host of complementary products and tremendous technical capabilities to drive custom product development across key markets, including health and wellness, specialty food, and household & industrial.
In all its iterations through the years — from manufacturer of glass tubing and vials in 1961, to plastic injection- and blow-molding, to innovator of the Neutraplex® glass tubular vials and an oral dispenser with a unique, patented wiper design — Comar has consistently demonstrated uncommon creativity and diligence when it comes to compliant custom packaging and dispensing solutions. The synergistic pairing of Comar and Convergence marries the capabilities of two powerhouse plastics packaging companies to produce an enterprise greater than the sum of its parts.
Still headquartered in the Garden State, with its expanded array of stock and custom products and manufacturing facilities firmly established in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, Comar is now poised for global expansion as well as broadened product development and manufacturing capabilities in North America.
Comar employs nearly 650 talented professionals who are driven by a companywide commitment to creative product development, exceptional customer service, and efficient manufacturing centered around engineering excellence, continuous innovation, and technical expertise.
